Stoke Gabriel
Sun, 07 Dec 1980
Sumptuous tea and snooker at Colin’s—amusingly, a few materialised for refreshments despite not riding. Before that, a brisk run to sunlit Stoke Gabriel turned bitterly cold on the return, leaving one youngster escorted home.
Dittisham

Rain Stopped Play for most people today. John and I met Colin and Mark at Totnes and, after a little deliberation, we decided to believe the forecast and press on. It rained thro...

Hamel Down
Sun, 21 Dec 1980
A mid-ride rummage for a giant chocolate bar sent us sprawling, after which clouds scuppered Hamel Down and we lunched on Haytor Rocks, bumped into a dog-walking friend, larked about on the tors, snapped Spitchwick, then tea at home.
Christmas Lunch Ride, Cockwood
Sun, 28 Dec 1980

The last week of 1980 saw our special Christmas Lunch run. Some chose to make their own way to the Ship Inn at Cockwood, but we were still eleven in number at Newton. Two shining...

Hennock Reservoirs
Sun, 11 Jan 1981
Finding a sunny picnic spot after a shadowed stretch near the hostel, the ride offered fine river and Dunsford views; more climbing through Bridford led to zig‑zagging between reservoirs and a glorious drop to Chudleigh Knighton Heath.

Weekend ride 17 Jan–18 Jan 1981

Bellever Youth Hostel 2

An “ordeal by wind” turned a weekend jaunt into a slog, forcing riders to walk on the flat and grind down hills in bottom gear. They survived their own cooking under leaden skies, woke to precipitation next morning and later rendezvoused with the Day Run at Moretonhampstead. Reports are very short.

North Bovey

We had arranged to meet the weekenders at North Bovey but, by chance, day run and week-enders met in Moretonhampstead and we picnicked in a shelter to see what the weather would do...

Gara Bridge
Sun, 25 Jan 1981

I hadn’t checked on the published pick-up point for the Gara Bridge run, but when we met Mark at Totnes he told me it was Marley Head, which did rather surprise me. But sure enoug...

West Ogwell
Sun, 01 Feb 1981

A good turnout for the February Afternoon Run, and nice weather to go with it. A couple of “Kerswells” – Kings and then Abbots – should have been followed with a couple of Ogwells...

Hansel Mill
Sun, 08 Feb 1981

Not a great number of miles but goodness knows how many feet (or metres) up and down for our run to Hansel Mill. Attendance was into double figures once we had reached the Totnes ...
