Day ride: Tinners' Hut (SX 638629)

1 Participants: Graham Brodie
On our run to Tinners Hut we reached the open moor but were hindered from travelling further by a “No Admittance” sign at the Waterworks through which the track passed. Perhaps a new route will be found on the next attempt.

Day ride: Wistman's Wood

0 Participants: No participants recorded for this event
The disappointement of Bellever was compensated by an excellent tea at The Old Forge tearooms in Holne village on the run to Wistman’s Wood. The destination was not reached but a very enjoyable run was carried out.

Afternoon ride: Ideford

1 Participants: Graham Brodie
November began with an afternoon run with 13 people out, including Veronica who rode with us after staying the night at Maypool YH for the Bonfire Night. The run took us out through the lanes past Abbotskerswell down into Newton Abbot and then through Sandygate, past Babbacombe and across the A380 to Ideford where we left Veronica. Back at Newton Abbot the run was split so that the younger lads without lights could press on and reach home before dark.

Day ride: Lannacombe Beach

3 Participants: Frank Boyes, Graham Brodie, Basil Ellis
The following week the destination was Lannacombe Beach, but the weather put paid to that! Although the morning was fairly dry, a strong wind meant that we could only get past East Allington for lunch. After that we wandered down to Slapton and along to Strete and Stoke Flemming. There we left the main road and cut through the lanes to Hemborough Post, from where we joined the main road to Halwell.

On the hill dropping down into Halwell a sequence of strange events began to occur when a flock of sheep coming up the hill sandwiched Basil and Frank between a car and then Frank’s cape blew up over his head. Fortunately, Basil was quick to the rescue and we had a safe journey home through Harbertonford and Totnes.

Day ride: AGM Chudleigh Knighton

3 Participants: Colin Brierly, Graham Brodie, Basil Ellis
The following week for the AGM, only Basil, Colin and myself rode out since the weather was rather poor (cold, wet and windy). The wind had caused a great fall of chestnuts down in Compton and so we spent a while collecting some bedraggled specimens and then continued through the lanes to Abbotskerswell and Newton Abbot, stopping at Kingsteignton to repair a puncture.

For the final leg we climbed up the ridge above Chudleigh and then had a swift descent into the village and on to Chudleigh Knighton.

Day ride: Avon Dam

5 Participants: Frank Boyes, Graham Brodie, Basil Ellis, Margaret Maxtead, Sue Shepley
The run to the Avon Dam proved quite eventful with 13 out. We wandered out to Totnes via Berry Pomeroy and then via Shinners Bridge to Marley Head and down on the old A38 to South Brent. From there we went through Aish and past Didworthy hospital to Shipley Bridge, where we realised there were four missing.

We waited and waited and eventually I rode back towards South Brent and was relieved to meet Sue and Margaret coming up the hill. But relief soon turned to despair when I realised there was still no Frank and Basil. Apparently, a confusing signpost only a mile away form the Dam sent all four off on a circular route back to South Brent, and whilst Sue and Margaret had realised this part way round, Basil and Frank had gone the whole way around and almost returned to Brent!

Fortunately, we were all back together before lunch was finished, and after some had wandered up to the Dam to see the water just spilling over the top we all headed for home on a route passing Dean Prior and Rattery and then across to Staverton and back to Marldon via Tally Ho and Red Post.
